One Acre Fund works to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. In Ethiopia, we engage farmers in agroforestry and community-based seed multiplication.  In partnership with the Amhara National Regional State, these programs have planted more than 10 million trees, produced over 500 MT of improved teff seed, and reached more than 65,000 farmers.  Now, we are now in an exciting phase of work in which we are trialing novel approaches and preparing for scale-up in the coming years. We have over 8000 employees globally, and our growing Ethiopia headquarters are in Bahir Dar, Amhara Region, with small offices in Addis Ababa, Finote Selam, and Motta.

We are looking for a skilled strategy and data professional to increase impact for the Tree Program by creating content, analyzing essential data, coordinating with the field team, and shaping strategy.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will increase impact for the Tree Program by creating content, analyzing essential data, coordinating with the field team, and shaping strategy. You will contribute to the program design and support of a rapidly-growing Tree project that provides high-quality tree seedlings to farmers in the Amhara region by supporting hundreds of tree-growing nurseries.

  • Your work will directly inform the high-level strategy that directs the activities of hundreds of staff.
  • Last season, OAF-Ethiopia delivered over 10 million trees to 85 thousand farmers. This season, we are planning to increase that by 50%.
  • You will report to the Program Design lead, an English-speaking international manager and you will be based in Bahir Dar.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create content

  • Write training documents on a variety of activities, from recruitment to planting to filling receipts.
  • Communicate the essential findings from data and surveys, then recommend a path forward
  • Interview a variety of stakeholders and staff, then summarize the responses in a clear and relevant way

Collect and analyze data

  • Use advanced Excel techniques to build complex spreadsheets that will take in data from a variety of users and display the results in clear, adjustable dashboards
  • Quickly build and roll out spreadsheets in Google Sheets that synthesize data from other sources
  • Use the data to analyze outcomes and recommend ways to improve our performance

Qualitative research

  • Find answers to critical agricultural questions, such as planting periods, root trimming methods, or anything else related to growing trees.
  • Interview farmers, nursery operators and field team members and synthesize the information into actionable items

Coordinate with field team

  • Conduct field visits (in-person & remote) to monitor and support field activities, including staff interviews and surveys
  • Communicate essential information to a field team of nearly 100 people
  • Gather feedback and requests from the field team and ensure they are acted upon
  • Conduct staff trainings

Manage team

  • Recruit and manage a team of short-term surveyors who will travel to different locations and collect data

QUALIFICATIONS

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • Perfect fluency in English and Amharic
  • Experience with MS excel (can maintain complex spreadsheets)
  • Experience with data analysis (1+ years)
  • Strong spoken communication skills, with the ability to:
  • Quickly reach a large number of people by phone
  • Proactively follow-up with stakeholders
  • Be persistent in requests for information or assistance
  • Comfort intense working environments and quick turnaround
  • 2+ years of experience in data analysis, agriculture, research, office administration or communication
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, communications or related field
