HFE is Founded in 1974 by Drs Catherine and Reginald Hamlin have been caring for the women of Ethiopia for almost 40 years. As well as our main hospital in Addis Ababa we also have 5 regional hospitals, rehabilitation, and reintegration center and a midwifery school. We also deploy midwives into 25 health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these health centers.

HFE, which established in 1974 G.C by Drs. Catherine and Reginald Hamlin, has been caring for the women of Ethiopia for almost 60 years. Including our main Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, we have five regional hospitals: rehabilitation and reintegration center and The Hamlin College of Midwives. We deploy midwives into rural health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these facilities.

Currently HFE is looking for dynamic, independently working and self-driven applicants in the following position.

Job Summary:

A Legal officer provides legal guidance to an organization.  His/her primary duties include structuring solutions for disputes, providing support in legal issues and reviewing legal materials and contracts as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support to the organization and management in all level as needed to Professional legal advice.
  • Appearing in court, providing legal advice, response; Provide legal opinions as requested.
  • Drafting different contracts, leases, and agreements etc. as needed.
  • Compiling legal documents on legal matters as required and delivering evidence for cases.
  • Ensure organizational legal matters are managed properly.
  • Proper participation and handlings of court cases of the Organization at Head Quarter and all other branches/Centers/ of the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.
  • Serve as the representative of the organization for legal affairs and respond to all legal requests in courts.
  • Reviews systems, policies and procedures of the organization and makes appropriate recommendations to improve productivity and quality service.
  • Conduct high level meetings with executive management, CEO and Board of Trustees whenever required. 
  • Reviews legal/court documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Advises on the more complex legal issues related to the administration, interpretation and enforcement of laws pertaining to the operations of the organization.
  • Supervises the conduct of research and analysis on legal matters pertinent to the HFE’s operations.
  • Participates in and/or supervises the review of existing legislation, rules, polices, procedures, SOPs, and regulations pertaining to the HFE and recommends/formulates appropriate amendments.
  • Reviews systems and procedures and recommends or devises strategies/ mechanisms to improve the effectiveness of legal services delivery.
  • Leads or participates in negotiations/consultations with external/internal parties.
  • Prepares memoranda, letters, and other documents on legal matters when required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education Requirement

  • Minimum Undergraduate degree LLB or LLM in Law

Work Experience

  • 5 + years’ experience as a practicing Attorney at Law 
  • Evidence of work experience provided by non-governmental organizations and private organizations should be verified as to whether employment tax has been paid. 
  • Evidence of work experience provided for the position should have a relevant direct relationship
Ability to Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Identify and analyze complex issues/ problems/ in administrative/management areas, recommend and implement solutions.   
  • Meticulous nature and organizational skills;
  • Strong communication and demonstrable communications skills, at least in English, Amharic and Oromiffa.
  • Willingness to travel to other Hamlin centers and outside Addis Ababa when necessary;
  • Ability to work autonomously and remain self-motivated.
  • A good understanding or Knowledge of Ethiopian Labour Law is mandatory
