Background

Ethiopia has one of the most complex human mobility environments in the world, with factors ranging from conflict, drought, environmental degradation, and damage to basic services and infrastructure, to changing livelihood strategies in an evolving political and economic milieu where poverty and progressive depletion of coping mechanisms available to the displaced and host communities exist in large portions of the country, often leading to more displacements. Health and MHPSS programs in Ethiopia support the vulnerable populations to cope with these situations by providing essential health and MHPSS services including medical consultations, nutrition, maternal and child health, health promotion, and referrals to tertiary health facilities. The health and MHPSS programs have been supporting the migrants from the Sudan crisis at the point of entry between Ethiopia and Sudan borders including Metema and Kumruk. These activities are integrated with the MHPSS program to ensure holistic approach to patient care. In addition, it supports the governments through health system-strengthening activities.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of sub-office in Amhara/Gondar, and the overall supervision of the Senior Project Associate in Addis Ababa, the successful candidate will support the implementation of an emergency health program in the target areas. In particular, he/she will:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

1.     Assist in the implementation and monitoring of project activities.

2.     Retrieve, compile, summarize, analyse, and present information/data on specific project topics.

3.     Monitor budget; verify availability of funds; obtain necessary approval and update budget-related information.

4.     Act as a focal point for administrative coordination of project implementation, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units and external parties to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, process, and follow-up on administrative actions, etc.

5.     Draft status reports, identify shortfalls in delivery, bring them to the attention of the supervisor, and suggest remedial actions.

6.     Draft correspondence on project issues; prepare and update reports, briefing notes, graphics, statistical tables, presentations, and other forms of documentation.

7.     Respond to complex information requests and inquiries; set up and maintain files/records; organize meetings, workshops, and training sessions.

8.     Participate in meetings and conferences; assist in coordinating implementation activities with local authorities, partners, United Nations agencies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, donors, and other stakeholders relevant to the project.

9.     Assist in monitoring the work of implementing partners and report non-compliance to the supervisor.

10.  Provide guidance/training to new/junior staff.

11.  Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications and Experience

Educational Qualification

·         University degree in Medicine, Nursing, or Public health from a recognized university

Experience

·         Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, United Nations agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

·         Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking, and other vulnerable groups; and,

·         Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organizations in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.

·         2 years’ work experience in the area of clinical activities and certification from the relevant authorities

 

Skills

·         Proficient in Microsoft Office applications e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-mail, Outlook; previous experience in SAP is a distinct advantage.

·         Attention to detail, and ability to organize paperwork methodically.

·         Discreet, details and clients-oriented, patient, and willingness to learn new things.

Languages

·         External applicants for all positions in the Professional category are required to be proficient in English and have at least a working knowledge of one additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

·         Working knowledge of other local languages is an advantage.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment and verification of residency, visa, and authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable. Only candidates residing in either the country of the duty station or from a location in a neighboring country that is within commuting distance of the duty station will be considered. In all cases, a prerequisite for taking up the position is legal residency in the country of the duty station, or in the neighbouring country located within commuting distance, and a work permit, as applicable.

As per UN Salary Scale – G4 (USD 1,440)
