AGRICONSULTING EUROPE SA (AESA) WILL RECRUIT TWO SHORT-TERM EXPERTS: (1) LABORATORY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN, (II) PPR- DOSSIER PREPARATION EXERT TO WORK WITH THE EU-FUNDED HEARD PROJECT.

AESA is a renowned international consulting company based in Brussels and provides a wide range of services in the Agriculture and Rural Development Sector. The company was awarded the contract to provide a technical assistance team (TAT) to support the implementation of the EU-funded €15 million 4-year projects ‘Health of Ethiopian Animal for Rural Development (HEARD). The TAT started work in August 2020 and is responsible for supporting the Project Coordination Unit in monitoring and coordinating project activities and providing advice and assistance. The project is implemented by five grantees: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) with the Ethiopian  Association (EVA); the Livestock Bureau of Amhara, Oromia and Somali NRS; and the Minister of Agriculture (MoA). AESA is the lead for the implementing consortium, which includes three additional organisations, namely, VSF Suisse, VSF Belgium and the State Food and Veterinary Services of the Republic of Lithuania, for this EU-HEARD technical assistance contract.

The two experts will be a short time and work full time. The duty station will be Addis Ababa, with a possible visit to Amhara, Oromia and Somali NRS as required. The fee rates will be negotiable.

Purpose of consultancy

  • To address an important gap identified in veterinary laboratories in Ethiopia, namely the shortage of high-level skills in the installation, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Scope of Work

  • Provide training in installation/calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment by type of equipment and laboratory.
  • Provide on-job practical training supported by the training course and training materials, including manuals/sops as required
  • Adopt a consultative and participatory approach and work to ensure the sustainability of the laboratory equipment maintenance/calibration and maintenance capability.

Qualifications Required

  • Formal qualification, preferably at degree level, as a biomedical engineer. Or related disciplines. Additional qualifications and practical skills in installing, calibrating, and maintaining modern laboratory equipment are required.

General Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional veterinary laboratory experience that included installation, calibration and maintenance of modern laboratory equipment, including that required for PCR tests.
  • Good knowledge of the English language;
  • Experience working in veterinary laboratories in Africa, preferably in East Africa, would be an advantage.

Specific Professional Experience

  • Proven experience in managing and advising in the operation of advanced laboratory equipment, including that required for PCR tests
  • Proven experience in installation, calibration and maintenance of Veterinary laboratory equipment in different laboratories
  • Proven experience in designing and delivering installation, calibration and maintenance hands-on training for laboratory technicians
  • Proven experience in developing and presenting training manuals
