The Civil Society Support Programme (CSSP) is a capacity development programme designed to support Ethiopia’s civil society and its contribution to the country’s national development, poverty reduction and advancement of good governance in line with the government’s policies and strategies. The five-year programme, which manages a fund of more than €35 million, commenced in 2011 and has a strong emphasis on ‘hard-to-reach’ civil society and citizens, using regionally-led programming. CSSP is managed by a consortium led by the British Council and is supported by multiple donors led by Irish Aid.
CSSP’s strategy is to invest in capacity development of individuals and organisations in Ethiopian civil society. Through grant mechanisms, the programme aims to support and demonstrate the effectiveness, legitimacy and value of civil society in contributing to national development and poverty reduction.
CSSP’s Secretariat is based at the British Council Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. It comprises the senior management team and two technical support teams: finance, grant making and administration; and capacity development, monitoring and evaluation and communications. The programme also has four Regional Business Units (RBUs), which expand its reach to regional and sub-regional levels. These units are based in Assosa, Harar, Hawassa and Dessie.
The British Council builds connections, understanding and trust between people in the UK and other countries through arts and culture, education and the English language. We work in two ways – directly with individuals to transform their lives, and with governments and partners to make a bigger difference for the longer term, creating benefit for millions of people all over the world. We help young people to gain the skills, confidence and connections they are looking for to realise their potential and to participate in strong and inclusive communities. We support them to learn English, to get a high-quality education and to gain internationally recognised qualifications. Our work in arts and culture stimulates creative expression and exchange and nurtures creative enterprise.
The Civil Society Support Program Phase 2 (CSSP2) is a capacity development programme designed to support the development of Ethiopia’s civil society to “contribute to inclusive and accountable governance; and an improved environment for the promotion and protection of the human rights of all Ethiopians”. To achieve this grand objective, the programme has identified four thematic areas (gender transformation, young people and citizen-state engagement, conflict and peacebuilding) and has taken a human rights-based approach as its key strategic approach. In addition to funding CSOs, CSSP2 provides technical and capacity development support through various means to CSOs, Networks, Coalitions, and Consortiums.
The purpose of the call is to invite interested individuals with relevant qualification and experience to provide training on Conflict Sensitivity Programming to CSSP2 grantee CSOs implementing projects in conflict settings under its conflict response and peacebuilding grant.
CSSP2 is thus seeking the services of a trainer with the relevant academic and professional expertise to prepare necessary and external training materials, among these, PowerPoint presentations, workshop exercises, Conflict Sensitivity/Do No Harm tools/resources, handouts for attendees. The training will be conducted for three days in between January and February 2023. The selected consultant will join a team of two Program Team members who will provide technical support, review presentation slides and support in the training facilitation process.
