Position Grade: G2

Type of Appointment: Special Short Term, Six months with the possibility of extension

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Sub Office and in close collaboration/coordination with the relevant Supply chain Unit staff in (sub-office) and Addis Ababa, the successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for driving IOM vehicles to transport persons and goods authorized by IOM, from one destination to another in a timely, safe and cost-effective manner, promoting a client and efficient service-oriented approach.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

1.   Drive assigned IOM office vehicle(s).

2.   Manage the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s) to ensure the roadworthiness of the vehicles.  This includes daily checks of tires, brakes, engine oil, fan belts, etc.

3.   Arrange for minor repairs and ensure that the vehicles are kept clean.

4.   Ensure that the vehicles undertake regular service intervals.

5.   Keep records of spare parts for the vehicle(s) and conduct a monthly inventory of the spare parts.

6.   Find the most direct and safe route over the best available roads to the destination.

7.   Ensure that the IOM vehicle(s) is used only for official/authorized business, as advised by the supervisor.

8.   Make sure that the daily log sheet is prepared, and a monthly report is prepared summarizing statistics linked to mileage, fuel consumption, etc. for the vehicle.

9.   Keep a high degree of confidentiality and discreteness in discussions, which involve IOM and its officials. Take proper actions to reduce potential security threats to IOM officials and/or property within the immediate vicinity of the vehicle and along transport routes.

10. Meet official personnel at the airport(s) and facilitate immigration and customs formalities as required.

11.  Ensure that all the communication system devices (radio HF, VHF) in the vehicle are in good working condition and inform the security focal staff and supervisor of any malfunctions.

12.  Ensure that all safety tools and accessories such as First aid kit, spare tires, jack & handle are available in the vehicles. Any missing tool must be reported immediately to the Supervisor.

13.  Ensure that all road safety and traffic regulations are obeyed, including wearing seat belts by drivers and passengers.

14.  Collect and deliver mail, documents, pouches, and other communications/items from and to the country office; go to the post office, airport, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites, etc., to take and deliver items and communications; keep records as required.

15.  When needed, assist and support the IOM beneficiaries/clients during pick up, transportation, and drop off.

16. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Educational Qualification: 

  • High school diploma/certificate with minimum 3 years of relevant working experience from an accredited institution.
  • Valid national driver’s license of Category D1 and P2 or level Grade 4 with the ability to drive automobiles, buses, and trucks.
  • Possession of a Mechanical certificate from an accredited school is advantageous.
  • Certificate of good conduct from the police (required if selected).

Experience:

  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
  • Experience in driving a variety of makes and models of vehicles
  • Knowledge of radio, email, telephone and other applications.
  • Good knowledge of routes within and around the duty station.

Skills:

  • Skills in minor vehicle repairs
  • Skills in Auto mechanic is advantageous
  • Basic computer skills specifically on Microsoft office is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and intercultural skills with ability to work well in a multicultural environment
  • Flexible working modalities and ability to handle pressure is desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Working knowledge of the local language (Somali) is Mandatory and Knowledge of other languages is desirable.
