The humanitarian aid organization Ärzte der Welt e. V. is the German division of the international network Médecins du Monde/Doctors of the World (MDM). The 17 members of the network implement domestic and international health care projects, currently almost 417 projects in 74 countries around the world.

MDM provides emergency medical aid in disaster and crisis situations, supports access to health care and, if possible, assists with reconstruction measures as well as long-term development co-operations in neglected regions around the world. MDM ensures that its health services are provided equally to the most vulnerable citizens, internally displaced people and host communities, regardless of their ethnic, social, religious or political background.

MDM has been working in Ethiopia since 1986, implementing different types of health projects from long-term interventions to emergency response. MDM Germany became operational in the country independently in 2021, pursuing two programmatic approaches: firstly, support for local partner in development-oriented projects and secondly, implementing larger scale emergency humanitarian intervention in Somali Region for the drought and conflict affected communities.

Purpose of the post:-

  •  Under the supervision of the Logistics assistant, the Driver will be responsible for the driving, repair and maintenance, safety and security, and documentation of the vehicle.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  •  The driver will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Provide driving/transport service to MDM-Ge staff/visitors with care respecting the faith and culture of national and international staff as per the direction of the line supervisor
  • Ensure all equipment allocated to the vehicle is complete and in good working order, including spare tires and communications equipment (radios, satellite phones, etc.), before undertaking any journeys.
  • Before commencing a journey, ensure that the vehicle is in good working condition, clean, appropriately equipped, and has adequate fuel for the intended journey.
  • Ensure all supplies and equipment to be carried are accompanied by appropriate paperwork, packed, and stowed away safely and securely.
  • Understand and practice MDM-Ge relevant policies, rules, and regulations such as transport, fleet, and security management policies for the Ethiopia mission
  • Drive the vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner in accordance with Ethiopia road transport regulations as well as MDM-Ge Ethiopia transport and security policy/procedures.
  • Maintain neat & accurate records of all journeys in the vehicle log book and ensure authorized travelers are signed for the journey that they used.
  • Keep and respect MDM-Ge driver rules, conduct, and safety standards e.g.  Daily and weekly safety checks are done at all times before starting the journey.
  • Report any faulty vehicle part for maintenance to the logistics assistant and ensure the periodical service is carried out time before  the scheduled service time is overdue
  • Maintain all safety and security measures for the vehicle and passengers. Ensure the vehicle is parked in a safe, appropriate, and secured area.
  • Keep all tools, spare tires, and other safety & health-related equipment with due care.
  • Always carry out basic security checks on the vehicles before starting driving and at the end of the day. (Battery water, fuel & oil levels, radiator water, Tire pressure/condition, etc.)
  • Report immediately any damage or incident/accident to the logistics assistant in line with the correct procedures.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is only used for MDM-approved purposes
  • Ensure MDM’s health and safety rules are respected e.g.  No mobile phones are to be answered when driving, and every passenger should wear Safety Belt while traveling with MDM car
  • As a representative of MDM the duty driver is expected to dress and behave in a respectable manner at all times
  • The driver should manage his time properly and report promptly to work. He should also ensure that he is adequately rested prior to service.

Education:-  High School Graduate .

Experience:-  Minimum of three years of driving experience in international NGOs, UN agencies with a clean driving record.

Type of driving license:- public 1 or above.

Languages:-  English language is mandatory Amharic and Oromo  essential, and Afar language  is desirable.

Competencies:- Good communication skills, flexibility, attention to detail, ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, quick decision-making and prompt action, open-mindedness, transparency and honesty beyond reproach, discretion, politeness, and courtesy. Excellent time management/timekeeping experience and dedication to respecting others’ time schedules. Willing to work as per the above-stated working hours and readiness to accept unanticipated orders outside his/her working hours. Able to undertake minor vehicle service and maintenance.
