The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training. 

Job Description- Associate Researcher I

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016 as biomedical research, clinical trial and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.

The Non communicable disease Research Division (NCDRD) is one of the departments in the institute. The NCDRD Division is looking for self-driven, motivated, innovative and energetic researchers to join our team as Associate Researcher I with cancer immunology experience.

Roles and responsibilities

Ø  Designing and conducting experiments to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of breast cancer development and progression.

Ø  Conducting literature reviews  in cancer immunology and breast cancer research.

Ø  Designing and conducting experiments to investigate the role of the immune system in breast cancer development, progression, and treatment response.

Ø  Working together with medical professionals and researchers, gathering and examining patient specimens including tumor tissues and blood samples to investigate immunological reactions in individuals with breast cancer.

Ø  Developing and optimizing immunological assays to assess immune cell populations, cytokine levels, and immune checkpoint molecules in the context of breast cancer.

Ø  Contribute to the preparation of research publications, grant proposals, and regulatory submissions.

Ø  Presenting research findings at scientific conferences and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals to contribute to the scientific community’s understanding of cancer immunology in breast cancer.

Ø   Build the capacity of lab technologists in the areas of cancer immunology techniques.

Ø  Enhance the capacity of the pathology lab unity in the sociality area of immunohistochemistry.  

Job Requirement

·         MSc in biomedical sciences

·         4 years experience

·         Skill in basic immunological and molecular lab techniques including immunohistochemistry Experience in cancer research is an advantage

Required skills and experience

Ø    Investigative Skills: Identifying problems, assessing risks, defining expected / potential results, inspecting specimens, cataloging information

Ø     Research / Quantitative Skills: Defining problems, designing experiments, utilizing laboratory equipment, using computers for computation / simulation, conducting studies, recording observations, interpreting results, utilizing statistical tests to predict outcomes, and preparing statistical reports.

Ø     Analytical Skills: Examining components of problems / ideas, reasoning logically, categorizing data, making projections from data, organizing ideas / information, and evaluating the effects of phenomena.

Ø   Communication Skills: Writing research proposals, contributing to teams, summarizing research findings, explaining complex ideas for technical and nontechnical audiences, designing charts, graphs and other visual aids, reporting results and conclusions orally and in writing, and presenting alternative explanations.

House Allowance: 6,000.00

Mobile & Internet fee: 1,000.00

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability
