NTE was established in 1935 as Imperial Ethiopian Tobacco Monopoly, the National Tobacco Enterprise (Ethiopia) S.C (NTE) has a strong Ethiopian heritage and the global outlook of its parent company, Japan Tobacco International (JTI).
 
JTI is a leading international tobacco products company and the main shareholder in NTE. It owns 71% of the shares of NTE acquired from the Government of Ethiopia in 2016 and 2017. This is the biggest investment by a Japanese company in Ethiopia to date.

Currently, the Company is among the top public enterprises in terms of annual turn over, profitability, and its contribution to the economy as a whole.  Annual turn over has continually increased, on average by Birr 190 million, during the previous five years period.  Similarly, its contribution to the economy in terms of taxes paid, dividend to the shareholders and job creation to the citizen as a whole is persistently increasing.  Annual tax related contribution to the economy (VAT, Excise tax, Income tax, dividend tax etc) has currently reached more than Birr 700 million. In addition to this, the Enterprise with one cigarette factory at Addis Ababa and four tobacco development farms at Shewa Robit, Awassa, Bilatie and Wolaita has employed more than 934 permanent employees and 3,305 temporary and casual workers.

The enterprise, in its five years strategic plan, has aimed and diligently working towards a greater market expansion with a vision of exporting cigarettes subsequent to the full satisfaction of domestic demand.  Accordingly, due attention is given to the expansion of new tobacco development farms besides upgrading the existing farms with the objective of domestically covering the factory’s tobacco leaf demand; thereby saving a substantial amount of foreign currency.   Moreover, the management of the enterprise is thriving to achieve a competitive advantage through cost leadership and differentiation

Purpose:

  • Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and supervises the nursery operations & the extension activities of the farm; works in close collaboration with farmers and government and non-government organizations to ensure the smooth working relationship.

Main Areas of Responsibility:

  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the nursery operations & the extension activities of the farm; ensures successful achievement of ideal seedling preparation, transplanting Ha and wet tobacco leaf production as per the approved plan; controls nursery & extension costs.
  • Ensures availability and adequate supply of ideal seedlings.  
  • Provides technical and material support to farmers at all level of production  to enhance better production in terms of quantity and quality, and conducts participatory monitoring and evaluation /assessment on the performance of each farmer regarding all operations like adequate land preparation, proper transplanting, plant spacing, irrigation, cultivation, fertilization, weeding, pest control , topping, de-suckering ,and on time, proper, by position& ripe ripping etc.; ensures that “Minimum Agronomic Standards” (MAS) are implemented on the above mentioned operations.
  • Organizes strong promotional and awareness raising campaigns to influence and enroll required number of farmers to be involved in green tobacco leaf production; facilitates the creation and development of respectful and lasting relationship between farmers and the LOC and also between various local government and non-government offices.
  • Organize the extension team and establish respectful extension system with farmers to enable farmers to smoothly accept & apply all directions & advice given by the agronomic team, organizes a mutually convenient wet leaf buying program and ensures reaping of only ripen leaf, Ensures Clear separation/grading of 1st & 2nd grade before buying and ascertains that price paid during buying is commensurate to the quantity and quality of leaf purchased.
  • Ensures that all EHS procedures and regulations are implemented on the nursery and extension works. Provides support and guidance to and evaluate the performances of subordinates; supervises the activities of subordinates.
  • Prepares and submits progress report periodically.
  • Manage various tasks & projects as they arise and upon Manager’s request.

Education:

  • BSC or College Diploma in plant science or extension.

Work Experience:

  • 4 years for BSC degree holders or 8 years for diploma holders, work experience in Agricultural extension.

Knowledge:

  • Fluent in English (oral & written),MS Office confident user, knowledge of Collective Labor Agreement, Internal Regulations and Safety Policy of the company.
