CONSTRUCTION SAFETY OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary responsibility of a construction safety officer is to enforce the implementation of contractor HSE policies that will reduce the risk of accidents on site and ensure that all workers are working in a safe environment and following correct safety procedures.

His/her job entails collaborating with contractors in conducting safety inspections, identifying potential hazards on project sites, including toxic materials, potential electrocution, structural threats to human life etc., and finding measures to reduce or eliminate such hazardous threats from the sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor compliance with safety policy and regulations on site
  • Enforce implementation of HSE management plans, processes, and practices,
  •  Promote safety culture on site
  •  Appropriately coordinate site emergencies, ensure safe mitigations and correct communication

General Responsibilities

  • Enforce implementation of contractor HSE Policies and procedures
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all personnel and third parties on site
  • Advise on measures to minimize HSE risks on site
  • Collaborate with the Contractor to ensure that the site complies with relevant safety legislation and regulations
  • Participate and facilitate Contractor HSE training of site staff, site safety meetings, and Toolbox talks
  • Perform daily site inspections
  • Enforce safety corrective actions as a result of site inspections, investigations or compliance requirements
  • Intervene in any unsafe activities or operations and take immediate action to correct the unsafe conditions, performance or actions
  • Ensures Contractor reports all incidents or accidents and implements appropriate corrective measures at the right time
  • Prepare and provide site HSE reports, as required by DAR site management
  • And any other duty added by the DAR office 

Education & Experience Requirements:

  •  Engineering background is preferred with a bias in civil engineering (B. Eng. Civ.)
  •   Any HSE courses attended are an added advantage,
  • Minimum 2 years experience in health and safety or the construction industry

Skills

  • Good computer skills e.g. MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.
  •   Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Highly organized and pay attention to details
  •  High level of integrity and accountability
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude 
  •  Proactive approach to problem-solving and ability to manage difficult situations with a positive attitude
