Hiwot Ethiopia is a nongovernmental endogenous organization. Hiwot Ethiopia is an organization implementing multi year’s project with its national and international development partners. Hiwot Ethiopia envisages a future where children and youth live healthy, happy and productive lives.

Power to You(th) is a five-year, consortium effort funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hiwot Ethiopia will be implemented in five districts of Northshewa Zone of Amhara region( Ataye town, Efratana Gidem,Kewet and Ensaro woredas, led by a consortium of three organizations: Amref Health Africa, Youth Network for Sustainable Development, and Hiwot Ethiopia. The Power to You(th) project will centre youth and harness the power of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in achieving change to harmful practices (HPs), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes, including unintended pregnancy.

Role purpose

The incumbent shall function primarily as the Project Management Specialist for Power to You(th) project at North Shewa Zone and lead social services ongoing activities such as combating sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), harmful practices (HPs), sexual and reproductive health (SRH)’ and social and cultural norms which are affecting girls and women.

Under the direct supervision of Project coordinator, the post holder is expected to meet the Power to You(th) project standards in achieving change to harmful practices (HPs), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes, including unintended pregnancy. As a gender specialist she/he will be responsible to work with the project coordinator and government partners to reduce sexual and gender based violence and harmful social and cultural practices. The role holder will be expected to work whenever new humanitarian onset happened in the organization. He/she is ability to perform multiple tasks under tight deadlines without sacrificing quality or accuracy. S/he will coordinate the day-to-day implementation of Power to You(th) project in accordance with approved project, guidelines, regulations and procedures of the assigned woreda/s. S/he shall assure technical oversight for gender integration into all aspects of the current and project activities and project design. 

 KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Responsible for the effective and efficient management of the given projects/program
  • Responsible for active supervision, coordination, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project progresses
  • Prepare and maintain activity and budget planning and reporting documents. Keep organized records physical and electronic (on share drive)
  • Work closely with project coordinator, target community groups and deliver technical, financial and material support for the target youth groups
  • Contribute during new project proposals development sessions as expertise and generate new ideas for further development of the program
  • Responsible for qualitative and quantitative reports based on the organization, government  and donors requirement
  • Organize workshops/seminars, platforms across the project areas on harmful practices (HPs), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), sexual and reproductive health (SRH)’ and other related issues
  • As a gender specialist provide technical support to youth, community group, government partners and partner CSOs to mainstream gender issues and ensure gender equality across power to you (th) project areas
  • Provide appropriate guidance to target groups to ensure that the Gender Equality & gender mainstreaming and safeguarding Policies is successfully implemented
  • Participate and contribute on training manuals and guidelines development process and deliver capacity building trainings for youth groups ,CSOs and the relevant government sector offices
  • Ensure children, youth and target community groups participation on project formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
  • Develop local level reporting structure and update the focal points contacts for the organization branch office
  • Participate on meetings, workshops/seminars, platforms and related forums organized at woreda and zonal
  • Maintain, promote and builds good relations/partnership with Power to you(th) beneficiaries, partner, their team, colleagues at head and branch office.
  • Represent the organization at appropriate project related meetings, workshops and platforms at woreda level
  • Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure activity implementations on course.
  • Ensure the organization and the donor data standards are met through ongoing activity data collection.
  • Responsibilities include accompanying visitors, ensuring that appropriate logistic support and safeguarding is in place
  • Development outreach and communications materials and deliver for the project coordinator
  • The role holder may be required to carry out additional duties with the reasonable of his/her level of skill and experience 

Besides to the Task she/he executes

  • Organizing and facilitate child safeguarding and PSEA awareness for volunteers, beneficiaries and other community representatives for humanitarian response and development programs
  • Ensure child safeguarding and PSEA messages are displayed in local language at project level
  •  Identify high risk projects, conduct risk assessment, identified mitigation strategies and recorded, monitor and update the status on the identified risk in collaboration with area program managers and focal points at field level

Employment term: two years contract and renewable depending on satisfactory performance

Qualification and experiences:

  • First degree and above in gender studies, social science and other relevant fields with minimum five years of relevant experiences
  • Good understanding of gender and power analysis (the drivers of violence) and basic knowledge of gender specific methodologies
  • Good knowledge and experience of implementing harmful practices (HPs), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) through:
  • Experience of delivering trainings and facilitating workshops.
  • experience in conducting project risk assessment, monitoring and report writing
  • developing and implementing reporting mechanisms
  • developing and implementing response mechanisms
  • Detailed knowledge of current relevant legislation policy, practice, guidance and good practice in Ethiopia.
  • Good knowledge and experience on monitoring and evaluation activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with both accounting and non-accounting personnel.
  • Experience of providing technical support and capacity building such as mentoring
  • A demonstrable commitment to children’s rights, gender equality and social justice

Desirable Skills:

  • Technical skill:- the ability to use the procedures, techniques and Knowledge of specialized field.
  • Human skill:-the ability to work with, understand, and motivate other people as individuals or in groups
  • Conceptual skill:- the ability to coordinate and integrate all of an organization’s interests and project activities
  • Communication Skill:- fluency in written, editing and spoken English
  • Proficient computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet
