NTE was established in 1935 as Imperial Ethiopian Tobacco Monopoly, the National Tobacco Enterprise (Ethiopia) S.C (NTE) has a strong Ethiopian heritage and the global outlook of its parent company, Japan Tobacco International (JTI).
JTI is a leading international tobacco products company and the main shareholder in NTE. It owns 71% of the shares of NTE acquired from the Government of Ethiopia in 2016 and 2017. This is the biggest investment by a Japanese company in Ethiopia to date.
Currently, the Company is among the top public enterprises in terms of annual turn over, profitability, and its contribution to the economy as a whole. Annual turn over has continually increased, on average by Birr 190 million, during the previous five years period. Similarly, its contribution to the economy in terms of taxes paid, dividend to the shareholders and job creation to the citizen as a whole is persistently increasing. Annual tax related contribution to the economy (VAT, Excise tax, Income tax, dividend tax etc) has currently reached more than Birr 700 million. In addition to this, the Enterprise with one cigarette factory at Addis Ababa and four tobacco development farms at Shewa Robit, Awassa, Bilatie and Wolaita has employed more than 934 permanent employees and 3,305 temporary and casual workers.
The enterprise, in its five years strategic plan, has aimed and diligently working towards a greater market expansion with a vision of exporting cigarettes subsequent to the full satisfaction of domestic demand. Accordingly, due attention is given to the expansion of new tobacco development farms besides upgrading the existing farms with the objective of domestically covering the factory’s tobacco leaf demand; thereby saving a substantial amount of foreign currency. Moreover, the management of the enterprise is thriving to achieve a competitive advantage through cost leadership and differentiation
Purpose:
- Under general supervision, plans, co-ordinates and controls all activities related to the green tobacco leaf handling, tying, racking, curing, grading, baling and handling of tobacco leaves during storage; ensure availability of the necessary materials, equipment and manpower before the onset of each production season.
Main Areas of Responsibility:
- Plans, coordinates and controls the leaf processing activities of the assigned LOC; prepares work schedule before the start of the production season; controls leaf processing costs & ensures assignment & wage payment of daily MP as per the labor usage norm .
- Ensures that the required materials /fire wood & fuel /, machinery and manpower are adequately prepared and made available; ensures that all machinery, equipment and materials are properly handled and effectively and economically used and also follows -up the timely maintenance of all production machineries and curing barns before the onset of the production season.
- Makes the necessary arrangement and gives most attention to avoid or minimize loss at all levels of the production process, Ensures curing by daily ensuring proper curing setting on all curing barns and ensures implementation of all JTI new way of wet leaf handling/off the ground & direct loading/, tying, curing, conveyor grading, baling and storage mechanisms are applied throughout the production process to achieve better result and deliver quality product that can meet the quality plan at the end;
- works closely with other departments like the leaf production and co-ordinates and creates balance between capacity of curing barns and that of wet leaf purchased;
- Ensures that established working practices, all EHS procedures and regulations are complied with on the farms all leaf processing areas and section works. Gives most attention to ensures workplace hygiene, sanitation and NTRM free leaf process and NTRM free cured leaf product.
- Provides support, guidance and evaluates the performances of subordinates and performs & reports all trials that are related with curing.
- Manage various tasks & projects as they arise and upon Manager’s request.
Education:
- BSC or College Diploma in plant science or Production Technology
Knowledge:
- Fluent in English (oral & written),MS Office confident user, knowledge of Collective Labor Agreement, Internal Regulations and Safety Policy of the company.
Work Experience:
- 4 years for BSC Degree holders or 8 years for Diploma holders, of work experience in Agricultural processing respectively
