The Ethiopian Public Health Institute(EPHI) is established by the council of ministers regulation No. 301/2013 which recognize the Institute an autonomous federal government office having its own legal personality. The institute is accountable for the Federal Minister of Health.
The institute shall have the following objectives:
1. Undertake research, based on national public health research agenda, on priority health and nutrition problems, and generate, absorb and disseminate scientific and technological knowledge to improve the health of the general public;
2. In collaboration with the concerned bodies conduct surveillance for the early identification and detection of public health risks and prevent public health emergencies through adequate preparedness; and alert, warn and dispatch timely information during public health emergency, respond effectively and timely and ensure rapid recovery of the affected population from the impact of the public health emergency;
3. Strengthen its laboratories with trained man power and technology to undertake problem solving researches provide effective response to public health emergencies, carry out referral diagnostic and analytical tests; and support the capacity building of health and food science laboratories at the national level to enable them provide quality
laboratory services.
The Institute secures average annual revenue of 25 million Birr and more than 20 million USD (in cash and in kind) from different donors.
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute, EPHI shall have advisory board in respect of policy, strategy and other major institutional matters.

Job Description
EpiGen-Ethiopia is a research grant funded by the Global Health (GH) – European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) – 3 / European Union (EU). The overall objective of EpiGen-Ethiopia is to strengthen pathogen genomic surveillance for provision of in-depth epidemiological data to support clinical decision-making and informed public health decision process in Ethiopia.
EpiGen-Ethiopia is a collaborative effort between EPHI and Amsterdam Institute of Global Health and Development (AIGHD), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), ISGlobal-University of Barcelona (Spain), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (Germany), AHRI, St. Paul’s Hospital Millenium Medical College (SPHMMC), Arsi University (AU), Jimma University (JU), Hawassa University (HU) and Baher Dar University (BDU).
In the above context, EpiGen-Ethiopia based at the EPHI is seeking Data Manager for effective data management and implementation of EpiGen project to accomplish its vision and mission.
Duties and responsibilities
Main duties and responsibilities will include:
. Collect and aggregate data sets for analysis as well as creating new data sets of summary statistics for presentation in data dashboards
. Involves in dataset preparation, assists data analysis and assists in report compiling.
. Cleaning data and methodically assessing its quality before analysis;
. Merging data sets or creating new data sets for analysis;
. Creating or deriving new variables from existing data sets;
. Labeling variables and ensuring that they are accurately described;
. Assessing the distribution of variables so that the most appropriate statistical tests are applied;
. Analyzing data using statistical software such as STATA or R by applying the most appropriate and robust statistical methods and sampling weights;
. Creating, annotating and maintaining syntax files of analysis that records all changes made to variables and the statistical procedures applied so that they can be checked and repeated;
. Methodically storing and cataloguing the syntax files, the output files and any history file of analysis to create a record of the analysis done;
. Creating tables of results and statistical output;
. Creating maps of the distribution of variables;
. Creating graphs and figures to present data;
. Helping technical advisors to interpret the output of analysis;
. Applying best practices in data processing, management and analysis.
. Monitors an EpiGen’s data systems to guarantee their security, protection and proper arrangement.
. Works individually or with a team of Data Operators, based on the need
. Works on upgrading and installing the necessary software, update hardware and storage equipment, help employees with data-related tasks, supervise the company’s data networks.
. Master’s degree in Biostatistics /Epidemiology/ Statistics with health background.
. Four years’ experience of work organising and analysing large data sets, ideally biomedical in origin using statistical software.
. Experience as a data manager in a research setting is an asset
. Experience in using statistical software: STATA and/or R statistical software would be an advantage.
. Technical skills to carry out the daily security, rules and protocols for data management tasks.
. Ability and being proactive in team works.
An ability to write reports of the analysis done in English.
